Botox Injections
Using Botox cosmetic injections, patients are now able to turn back the clock,
addressing signs of aging such as facial lines and wrinkles. Originally intended
for use in the treatment of neurological disorders, Botox cosmetic injections
temporarily paralyze the small muscles that cause creases and folds to form,
smoothing the facial skin and creating a more youthful appearance. Botox
cosmetic injections can be administered in less than ten minutes, and the
results last for months, making Botox cosmetic injections one of the most
convenient and cost-effective cosmetic procedures available today.
Botox cosmetic injections are administered using a fine needle, injecting the Botox directly into the muscle tissue. The results of Botox cosmetic injections become visible within days, and can last for four months or longer, depending upon the individual treated and the area of the Botox cosmetic injections. Many patients retain their results with follow up treatments, receiving additional Botox cosmetic injections every four or five months. There is a low risk for side effects associated with Botox cosmetic injections, including local swelling, bruising, numbness, or a burning sensation. Certain medications, as well as some vitamins and herbs, increase the odds of side effects associated with Botox cosmetic injections, so it is important to tell us about any medications or herbal supplements you have taken in the past two weeks.
Botox cosmetic injections are considered extremely safe and effective for treatment of facial lines and wrinkles by surgeons around the world. Patients who are ill-suited to more extensive procedures and/or who show early signs of aging are often excellent candidates for Botox cosmetic injections. David M. Godat, MD, a board certified plastic surgeon can explain to you more fully the risks and benefits of undergoing Botox cosmetic injections, and can help you determine if you are qualified for this treatment.

Side Effects
On rare occasions after treatment with Botox, patients may experience eyelid
drooping and slight puffiness. In the unlikely event that this occurs, it should
only last a short time. You may also find that skin may be slightly bruised over
the injection site. This is temporary and will resolve itself over a few days.
Very occasionally, patients may find they become resistant to the drug after
several treatments of Botox, and it may no longer work effectively.
Certain groups of people are at greater risk of experiencing Botox side
effects. These groups include people with pre-existing infections at the
injection site and people with cardiovascular or neuromuscular disorders.
